Klootchy Creek Giant: Tallest Sitka Spruce, Oregon
Nestled in an old-growth forest in the far northwestern corner of Oregon stands the world's tallest Sitka spruce tree — a 216-foot-tall specimen.
The giant's trunk is 56 feet in circumference, and its crown spreads 93 feet. Believed to be about 750 years old, the tree is located in 10-acre Klootchy Creek County Park.
My sister took me and my 6-year-old grandson to see the “Klootchy Creek Giant”, Oregon's biggest tree, and we weren't disappointed. A hush fell over us as we stood and gazed in awe at this natural wonder.
A wooden deck surrounds the base of the tree (see photo above). This allows visitors to view the tree from all sides without harming the roots and bark and also makes the attraction wheelchair accessible.
The park is located on U.S. Highway 26, a few miles east of U.S. Highway 101 and about 10 miles south of Seaside. There's no admission fee.
If you're looking for a place to camp or park your RV, Fort Stevens State Park is located about 20 miles north of Seaside. Open year-round, it offers 252 tent campsites and 209 RV sites with full hookups.

A Sitka Spruce called Falcon's Tower was recently nominated to compete for Oregon's largest spruce. It will be compared to the Cape Meares Spruce, presently recognized as the new large Spruce.
Alas, this poor beloved icon has fallen. December 2, 2007 it fell in a windstorm that produced hurricane strength winds. You can still visit and see the bottom 75 feet of the tree...and some of the pieces they have left for regrowth. Unfortunately, you may only be able to read of its awesome heighth and beauty at this point.
