Cathedral Gorge State Park, Nevada: Wander the Maze of Fluted Spires and Domes

Cathedral Gorge State Park in southeastern Nevada is as fascinating as its name implies. This canyon with buff-colored clay walls has eroded into a fantastic maze of fluted spires and domes.

Two of the park's areas–Cathedral Caves and Canyon Caves — are especially fun to explore. Most of the caves are actually narrow slots that twist and turn through the clay corridors, with walls rising up to 50 feet. We thought of it as a big natural playground!

Cathedral Gorge is located 1 mile north of the intersection of U.S. Highway 93 and State Highway 319. Admission is $3 per vehicle.

There are 22 developed campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis.

While you're there, don't miss the nearby mining town of Pioche. Built on a hillside, it once had the reputation as one of the toughest towns in the Old West. None of the first 70 people buried in the local cemetery died of natural causes!
