6 Things You Need To Consider Before Traveling With Your Westie

Once you own a westie, they instantly become a member of the family and you become inseparable. So, before you start packing your bags to take your westie along on your upcoming trip, here are a few things you should keep in mind:

1. Airline pet policy

In most cases, there shouldn't be a problem with taking your westie on board; however, it is important to double check the airline policy before you make arrangements. You might find that the airline you're flying with may not allow pets on their flights, or has specific instructions when it comes to pets.  With feedback on this issue from WestieVibes.com, it is evident that some airlines have a weight limit when it comes to pets. While your westie is most likely to be within the weight limit, you should always check with your airline's policies, so you don't end up ruining your trip entirely.

It's also important to know the requirements in terms of the transport bag dimensions or specifications that change from one airline to another. In most cases, you'll also need to buy a ticket for your westie or sometimes a specific cabin bag. So, before you make any plans, double check through  the airline's website so that you can be fully prepared.

2. Appropriate westie destination

Not all hotels allow pets, which is why  you'll need to give your hotel a call and inquire about whether your westie will be permitted to enter the property or not. You don't want to go through the hassle of travelling only to find that your westie isn't allowed to stay there.

There are some destinations that are very pet friendly and are constructed in a way that allows you to

move freely with your dog, where your westie is welcomed in most shops, restaurants, bars and even popular tourist attractions. However, you'll find that not all travel destinations are like that and sometimes it can cause panic and irritation to your pet. So, before you consider taking your westie with you, make sure that the destination is appropriate and welcoming and that your dog won't panic from the immense crowds and noise.

3. Consult your vet

Visiting your vet before travelling is essential to check a full checkup before you leave the country. It is also crucial in order to get tips on how to take care of your westie on the plane or what medications to take with you just in case.

Since your dog will be in a bag for long hours during the flight, the vet might have some recommendations on how to make them feel better or what to do if they get tired, or have difficulty sleeping, and offer advice on  the best food to take along on your trip that will be good for their stomach. Depending on the weather conditions or the environment you're headed to, there could be precautions to take that your vet will give you a heads up about.

4. Make sure all vaccinations are up to date

Before you travel, it is essential to make sure that all your westie's vaccinations are up to date and that you have medical proof ensuring that his health is up to standards. You should also check if there are specific vaccines needed, especially if you're travelling to a tropical destination.

In some countries, animals are prohibited in order to prevent them from possibly spreading any diseases or microbes that could have an impact on the country's environment. It is also necessary to make sure that your westie has an ID and that the documents  and health certificates are there to be shown when boarding flights or crossing borders.

5. Be prepared for health issues

It is very common for a different environment to make your westie feel a little under the weather. Especially with flights and the difference in pressure, you can find that your westie is suffering from an upset stomach or is feeling a bit nauseous. That's why it is important to be prepared in advance and give them extra supplements after the consultation with your vet, of course.

It is also common for your westie to face issues such as constipation,  so having natural foods or snacks that can aid with this issue will help you deal with it as soon as you spot that your westie is feeling unwell.

Prepare in advance foods such as figs, raisins, prunes, or fresh berries to give your puppy as they really help with the bowel movement. Accompany that with a bit of exercise and comfort your dog by removing any anxiety of being in a new place. In all cases, it is best to look up local vets in the area you'll be staying in and have the information in case of emergencies ready.

6. Take weather conditions into consideration

When travelling to a very hot destination, your westie's paws can really suffer and get burnt. That's why it is necessary to do thorough research in terms of weather and how to adjust your westie accordingly to prevent him from suffering. You'll find that there are different paw shoes or covers that you can purchase, according to the weather conditions you're heading to.

If the streets and pavements are very rough with lots of pebbles, you could find your westie's paws being injured, too. Instead, just purchase the required shoes to ensure their safety. However, if the weather is too cold, you would need a jumper, coat or a thick piece of covering to wrap around your westie and protect them from getting sick due to the cold or rain.

To prevent your pet from getting lost, remember to always your westie's collar along with a name tag. Keeping your  dog safe and ensuring that they have a great trip without becoming too anxious, nervous or stressed should be your  main goal. Always seek professional advice and get the necessary tips from someone who has been in your shoes and knows what to expect and what to do in order to be able to plan accordingly.
