Museum of the Plains Indian on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana
I happily paid a second visit to the Museum of the Plains Indian on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Montana, near Glacier National Park.
My husband and I squeezed in a quick tour several years ago when we were in the area. But I really wanted more time to explore this outstanding collection of historic arts created by 11 tribes of the North Plains.
My favorite exhibits included the historic clothing, which featured intricate beaded designs in geometric patterns that varied by tribe, and an exhibit of bold paintings by contemporary Native American artists.
Browning is at the junction of U.S. Highways 2 and 89, about 12 miles east of the eastern end of Glacier National Park. The Museum of the Plains Indian is open 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily, including holidays, from June through September and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from October through May.
Admission, charged only in summer, is $4 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12 and $1 per person for groups of 10 or more people. For more information, call 1-406/338-2230 or log on to www.doi.gov/iacb/museum.
