Car and Carriage Caravan Museum, Virginia: See Restored Vehicles From the 1700s

Luray Caverns in north-central Virginia's Shenandoah Valley boasts a host of attractions. But my favorite is its Car and Carriage Caravan Museum, with authentically restored vehicles from the 1700s to just before World War II.

The vehicles range from a Conestoga wagon to an 1892 German Benz, one of the oldest operable cars in America. Watch for the 1909 Middleby (above right), one of only three known to exist. I loved movie star Rudolph Valentino's 1925 Rolls Royce; the special paint job makes it look like it's covered with alligator leather!

Luray is where U.S. Highways 211 and 340 meet, about 15 miles east of I-81 and 33 miles northeast of Harrisonburg. The caverns are just west of town on Highway 211.

The museum opens at 9 a.m. daily, and closes 90 minutes after the last caverns tour. Admission to the caverns — $18 for adults and $8 for children ages 7-13–includes museum admission.
