Explore the African Queen Steamboat Docked at Key Largo, Florida

We were surprised to find the African Queen, the steamboat immortalized in the 1951 movie of the same name, docked in a canal in Key Largo, Florida.

Built in England, the 36-foot steel-hulled boat was originally named Livingston and toiled as a ferry on Lake Albert.

Those duties were interrupted in 1951 to film the legendary John Huston adventure-romance film. It starred Katherine Hepburn as a straitlaced missionary who persuades a hard-boiled, gin-swilling boat captain, played by Humphrey Bogart, to attack an enemy ship in North Africa during World War II.

There's no charge to walk up and look at the boat. It's docked at the Holiday Inn Key Largo Resort (99701 Overseas Hwy.) in Key Largo, located on the eastern end of the Florida Keys on U.S. Highway 1.
