Stained Glass Manor of Vicksburg, Mississippi: Stay a Night or Take a Tour
Civil war buffs who visit Vicksburg, Mississippi shouldn't miss Stained Glass Manor, a bed-and-breakfast that offers public tours.
Our guide, owner Bill Smollen, regaled us with tales of local history. He told us the home was built by a descendant of town founder Burwell Vick. Designed in 1902 by George Washington Maher — who taught Frank Lloyd Wright — the Prairie-style home boasts an incredible 36 original stained glass windows with amazingly delicate detail, most still in excellent condition. You'll also see lovely carved-oak paneling and a magnificent curved staircase.
Vicksburg is where I-20 meets U.S. Highway 61 in western Mississippi, about 40 miles west of downtown Jackson.
Stained Glass Manor (2430 Drummond St.) offers tours daily; For tours or reservations, call 1-800-771-8893.
