Camp in Buckskin Mountain State Park, Arizona

I think Buckskin Mountain State Park is one of the best places to camp when traveling along the Colorado River in west-central Arizona.

Located along the so-called Parker Strip, an 18-mile stretch between Parker Dam and Headgate Dam, the park is a great base from which to explore the area's many wonders. In particular, I enjoy the River Island Unit, nestled between spectacular volcanic cliffs.

We were told this unit's 37 campsites often were no more than half full; during our stay, about half of the 30 or so sites were occupied (only water hookups available). The sites are wide, deep and level, and some have concrete pads. Other amenities include clean restrooms, hot showers and a dump station.

The Colorado runs slow here, so boating, swimming and fishing are popular activities. And a walk along the unit's Habitat Trail (1 mile round-trip) provides sweeping views of the river and surrounding mountains.
