How to Support Your Child Learning from Home

Whether your child is learning remotely from school or they are home educated, it's so important that you do as much as you can to find ways to support their studying. Children require a lot of help when it comes to learning from home, and it's not necessarily because they are not motivated when they are learning at home. Most of the time, it's because they are spending their time unfocused. It's much easier to be unfocused when you are learning from home because there are so many more distractions.

As a parent, there is thankfully more that you can do to make sure that your children are not as distracted when they're trying to learn. From bringing in the right materials, such as Spectrum books, stationary and even a tutor, to ensuring you are asking your children how they feel while they learn, there is plenty that you could do as a parent to help your child to feel supported within their learning at home. It doesn't all have to be stress and doom and gloom, and here are some tips to help you to support your children while they learn at home.

  1. Mix up learning with real life examples. It's not easy to conceptualize mathson grammar, and science experiments can go way over their heads if they have no idea what you're talking about. When you bring real life into the equation however you can help your children to understand what it is you are trying to say. For example, doing your own science experiments from home with baking soda and a range of chemicals is a great way to help them to conceptualize what you're trying to teach. It can help them to envision what you are saying so that they are able to learn more effectively.
  2. Talk to their teacher. If you are trying to encourage extra learning at home, talk to your child's teacher to see where their strengths lie. There may be some things you're doing wrong but not because you know it, but because you don't know how your children prefer to learn. Understanding your child's learning style is a good way to begin when it comes to learning from home, because then you can help them with the education that they need rather than the education you want them to have.
  3. Take homework off the table. When you finish your working day and you go home do you want to continue doing your job? Of course not. You want to be able to decompress and relax ready for the next day ahead. Unfortunately most schools don't have this opinion and they believe that children as young as four should be doing homework. The good news is that you can help your children to learn without having to sit them down at a table to do more worksheets and mathematics. Help your children to learn by telling the teacher that you will do homework in a real life setting. For example, you could cook together and teach them how to measure ingredients. You could do counting in a way that means that they are counting their toys and while they tidy their rooms. Children don't have to do more homework to have an education at home, so it's important you discuss this with their teacher.
