Get the most from your training at a gun range

If you've decided to learn how to shoot, there's no doubt that the best thing to do is to get down to your local firing range and book some training from the experts. What should you do to prepare for your first session and ensure you get the most from your training? Here are a few pointers to help you get it right.

1. Do some research

Before heading to the range, it's a good idea to equip yourself with a little background knowledge. Use online resources to understand the basics of how guns work and the types of firearms.

Also, while every range has its own rules, some safety regulations are universal. Familiarize yourself with them before you arrive they'll generally be explained online.

2. Book classes

Instruction will ensure you learn the correct technique if you're a complete beginner. In some ranges, such as Shoot Point Blank Naperville it's also possible to book two shooters in the same lane for a small additional fee, so you can also bring a friend along and train together.

3. Beginners are welcome

The first time you visit a shooting range can be a little daunting.  But these experts who are training you were also beginners at one time, so don't think twice about asking them for help.  They'll always be pleased to answer questions and help you get the most from your time on the range.

If you're reasonably physically fit, you can learn to shoot. If you're recovering from a recent illness, or have underlying health problems, check with your doctor to get the go-ahead.

4. Wear the Right Gear

Sturdy clothes, which cover the shoulders and chest, will protect you.  Closed shoes or boots are preferable to trainers.

If you don't have your ear protection, the range will supply it. It's natural to feel that you'd be more comfortable without it. Don't be tempted to remove it though, and avoid the risk of serious permanent damage to your hearing.

Eye protection is also essential. Don't be tempted to wear your favorite shades, normal sunglasses are not just not adequate for the job they'll need to do.  Normal strength glass can shatter and penetrate the eye with extreme force.  If you want to invest in your equipment, choose good-quality wrap-around shooting glasses that will offer impact resistance and shatter-proof lenses.

Follow Basic Safety Rules

Keep in mind that safety is all-important. Every rule is there for a reason, and you'll soon get familiar with the way things work.

Follow any instructions given by the range officer, immediately.

Load your gun when you're ready to use it, but always assume that every weapon is loaded.

Always leave the safety catch on when the gun isn't being used.

It is forbidden to point a gun at anything other than a target.

Observe range etiquette and never touch anyone's equipment without their express permission.

If you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol, stay away from the range, even if it means missing your class- you probably won't be allowed to shoot anyway.

Don't behave in a way that could distract or annoy others. Save conversations until you've left the lanes.
