How to Support Your Spine Health (and Why You Should)

The health of your back and spine is so important, that's what supports every movement that you make. It's one of those things that you don't realise just how important it is until something goes wrong, and when it does (even if it's just for a short time) it can be debilitating. Back/ neck/ spinal pain is one of the leading reasons people take time off work which isn't good for the workplace as well as for you as a person. Sometimes accidents happen or things can just go wrong with no real reason behind it which you can't really plan for. But there are plenty of things that you can do that can be protective for your spine, read on to find out more.

Maintain good health overall
Staying in good shape overall is one of the best things you can do to protect all areas of your body, your spine included. This means staying at a healthy weight and exercising regularly which will keep your muscles strong. This is important as strong muscles will help to keep your posture in check, and when things become misaligned is when pain and issues can start. Doing the right exercise is important, your starting point your age and your health are all things to take into consideration. If you're older and havent exercised for a while and are already having joint pain then something like sprint running for example probably isnt gong to be your best choice, and will likely make things worse. If you look into things like disc herniation causes then there are actually a number of exercises to avoid.  If you're not sure then starting out with walking and swimming are two exercises that most people can do and you can build up from there. You want to be building good core strength to really improve and protect your spine in particular.

Invest in a good mattress
Beds can be expensive, and a good mattress is always going to cost a bit. If you're in the market for a new one then save for longer if you can it will always be worth it. You could save money on the bed frame itself buying something cheaper or even second hand, as what the comfort level will come down to is the mattress.

Take regular breaks
Most of us work sedentary jobs these days, which seem like they'd be a safe bet in many ways for our physical health. There doesnt seem to be as many opportunities to get hurt compared with physically demanding jobs but it's not quite as clear as that. Injurties and strain over time can happen because of too much sitting and the lack of exercise thats a result of being stuck working in your seat all day. Get up as often as you can and make some time to walk around and stretch. If you're able to swap to a standing desk that's even better, there are also under desk exercise equipment items you can buy which can help as well.
