Pennsylvania is rock-ribbed. The steely mountain ranges of the Appalachian chain lock the state’s midsection in a series of ridges and valleys not unlike a rib cage. But plant life and the hand of man have gradually softened the rough terrain. Few vistas in the eastern United States are more bucolic than the cultivated fields of Pennsylvania Dutch country, and few forests offer a more verdant display than those of the Allegheny Plateau.
