Warhawk Air Museum, Idaho

At the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa, Idaho, I got a fascinating look at flight, from World War I through future space-age research. It's housed in a 20,000-square-foot building located, appropriately enough, right next to the airport.

Under the watchful eyes of two magnificent Curtiss P-40s used by World War II's Flying Tigers, I browsed veterans' medals, survival gear, letters from home and art that soldiers created in the trenches, then admired more impressive planes. You can watch veterans' taped reminiscences, and then zoom off to the future at the science-based Space Place Club area, sponsored by NASA.

Nampa is located on I-84, about 15 miles southwest of Boise. The museum (201 Municipal Dr.; 1-208/465-6446) is open Tuesday through Saturday from mid-October through early April. In summer, it's also open on Sundays. Basic hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but vary slightly by day and season. Admission is $10/adults, $8/seniors(65+), $4/children ages 5-12.
