Web Page Size for Search Engines
Not too long ago, most people in the search engine optimization (SEO) industry would've recommended that web pages be no larger than 100 KB in size. For the most part this seemed like a reasonable number and most people didn't complain because who makes pages that big anyway!?
But things change and Serge Bondar over at SitePoint.com decided to find out what the current size limit is with the big 3 search engines i.e. Google, Yahoo, and MSN. He does a great job of describing his experiment and so I'm inclined to believe that his results are accurate.
For those that just want to know the results, Serge determined that Google will index pages up to 520 KB, Yahoo up to 210KB, and MSN up to 1030 KB. These sizes apply to just the HTML that is downloaded. Things like images, Flash, video, and audio are ignored by search engines and so don't factor in to this number.
