WordPress for Web Sites

I was recently asked to build a simple web site. From what I was able to determine, the site was going to be content-based and it wouldn't require a complicated navigation system. I didn't want to get in to building a custom solution that would be flexible, but would require more time than I was willing to invest in the project. So I turned to WordPress.

In a previous post I wrote a brief introduction to WordPress and explained how it is as flexible and feature-rich as any other blogging software I had worked with. But it can be used for more than just blogs. After a few adjustments to the template files mostly to turn off the blogging features and I was left with a tool that could be used to build a web site. Using the page posting features (as opposed to blog posting), I was able to build a web site with a basic, hierarchical navigation system. I also left a portion of the site dedicated to displaying Google AdSense ads.

New pages can be added via a browser-based interface. No need to manually edit html files. All links are automatically added to the navigation and the pages becomes available on the Internet at the click of the publish button. Although still being tweaked, the site is now public with minimal fuss.
