Depression Types and Symptoms
Depression is a broad term which is used to define changes in how a person feels and thinks, which, of course affects many aspects of behavior. Many people suffer from minor depression which may last for a few hours or a couple of days. But in some cases this can be much more severe, lasting for many days, weeks, or even months. Of course the severity of the depression can also vary, from mild to very severe.
The cause of depression can vary, from hormonal imbalances, to some kind of genetic predisposition. In some cases it can be brought on by severe stress, e.g. loss of a loved one.
Types of Depression
- Bipolar: a situation where there are highs and lows in mood swings
- Dysthymic: minor depression that persists for a long time, e.g. 2 years
- Major: the most serious type, with the most noticeable symptoms
- Adjustment: refers to depression that occurs because of a stressful situation
- Seasonal Affective Disorder: not yet officially recognized, but it affects people who become depressed during the winter months when there is less sunlight
Symptoms and Signs of Depression
- feeling tired, worthless, and hopeless
- feeling like giving up
- having constant negative thoughts
- loss or increase in appetite
- lack of desire to engage in social activity
- sometimes physical illnesses can also manifest themselves because of depression
- sometimes suicidal thoughts may start to prevail
If you, or someone you know, is depressed, there is help. This is a disorder that has been studied in depth, and there is help out there, with about 80% success rate. Cognitive changes, and a behavioral therapy are generally very affective, an many times medication is not required. But the important thing is to know that there is help available.
